Vision

To Dr. Haake, clinical problems like periodontitis were not just conditions to be treated, but also served as windows for understanding the roles that periodontal bacteria play in human disease. Because of their broad-based training, clinician-scientists have the unique ability to apply the power of basic research to solving our most pressing clinical problems.

Dr. Haake's ability to bridge the gap between the laboratory bench and the dental chair allowed her to make important and lasting contributions to our understanding of oral health and enabled her to teach these concepts to others in a meaningful way. Unfortunately, there is a critical shortage of clinician-scientists because of the cost of dental education and the need for an extended period of training after dental school. The purpose of the Susan Kinder Haake Scholarship Fund is to encourage students to follow in her footsteps and pursue such a career.
